The move was prompted by a desire to raise the retailer's profile in what Ayton calls the "leading provincial cities". Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester and Birmingham can all expect store openings in the next couple of years.

Charged Links Jewellery

Designers, meanwhile, continue to reach for ever-more obscure stones in an effort to stand out. Prasiolite, for instance, isn't exactly known as a girl's best friend. But Terri Eagle christmas links of london , chief executive of jeweler John Hardy, says the company chose the grass-green stone mined in Brazil for a line of $995 rings it is about to roll out because green is supposed to be a popular color this year and "we didn't want to do something that was your common green gemstone christmas links of london on sale." Designer David Yurman plans a line of cuff links and pendants featuring black stones with red streaks that the company calls dinosaur bones and describes as the mineralized remains of prehistoric animals. It introduced the stone last year in $475 to $1,875 men's rings.

The result is that it's harder for consumers to tell which stones should command top dollar and which shouldn't. "I always thought anything that wasn't a diamond, ruby or emerald was the same as cubic zirconia costume jewelry," says Cheryl Russo, an attorney from Hanover, Mass., who recently eyed a $150 pair of citrine earrings but didn't buy them.

Some jewelers acknowledge that stores can charge a premium for colored jewelry because consumers tend to pick these pieces based more on style than value. "The profit margins are much more elastic Links Bracelets," says Jim Haag, managing director for high-end jeweler Jacob & Co., who suggests seeking the advice of a trusted jeweler.

Color intensity is the best way to gauge quality of these stones, experts say. The more saturated the color in both clear and milky stones, the more valuable they are. Clear stones that don't have white streaks in them also are more valuable. Peter Schneirla Links Bangles , vice chairman at Harry Winston, adds that colored stones should be purchased in person, rather than online, because colors vary widely. "There's no standard by which to compare and express color and quality with colored stones like there is with diamonds," he says.

The End of Links Show

WHILE this year's main Edinburgh festival boasts several major exhibitions, the fringe's visual arts activities are once again a disappointment. However, there is one major show christmas links of london sale, independent of either festival, that makes an Edinburgh visit worthwhile. The Fruitmarket Gallery's most ambitious show to date is devoted to Max Ernst (1891-1976), one of the most influential Surrealist artists.

What distinguishes the Fruitmarket's show from others on Ernst is that it focuses on an area of his art that has long been overshadowed by his painting and graphic work xmas links of london . It is the most comprehensive study of the master's sculpture in many years, a prelude to the celebrations of his centenary next year. The Tate Gallery is planning a retrospective, and there will, no doubt, be plenty of other exhibitions throughout the year. By the end of it, gallery-goers may well have had an ample sufficiency of Ernst.

Ernst taught himself to paint while studying philosophy at the University of Cologne. The Fruitmarket has assembled his complete bronzes, some 60 pieces, reliefs cast from the walls of his house in Sedona, Arizona, and gold and silver jewellery. Lenders are the artist's estate in New York (the first time they have lent all the sculptures to a single show), and various private and public collections.

The works are immediate, both playful and enigmatic, and can be enjoyed on several levels. They embody the recurring themes and thoughts he put down on paper, in his paintings and graphic works. They include his ideas about the subconscious Links Charms , dreams, metamorphosis, with found objects assembled and cast until they lost their original appearance.
